Adult and Senior Programs Division

Parks & Recreation Department

The Adult and Senior Programs Division benefited greatly from the opening of the Community Center. Participation in the social, educational, and social service programs provided are at record numbers. Adults and seniors participate in excursions to area attractions, events, classes, seminars and cultural activities. The number and variety of programs has increased to meet demand.

Working with residents, Roxy Lohuis, Adult and Senior Programs Coordinator, and staff have developed classes and activities to meet the needs of this population. Through this Division, the Department strives to provide quality leisure opportunities for all sectors of the population.

Many cultural events and off-island excursions for adults and seniors are available including popular trips to the to the theater, ballet, museums, parks, and shopping destinations. Details of upcoming events for adults and seniors are available at the Active Islander website, the online version of Village's thrice yearly quality of life publication that features Community Center programming, althletics and seasonal special events.

A partnership with the Active Seniors on Key Biscayne (A.S.K) Club in 2011 enhanced the services and programs available to seniors. A Social Security Administration representative visits the Community Center on a monthly basis to assist residents. Florida Department of Motor Vehicles staff is present on a bi-monthly basis. The Florida Licensing on Wheels program provides residents with all the services provided by the DMV department without having to leave the island. The University of Miami has hosted several parenting skills seminars for residents.

The Village's senior transportation program provides a vital service to the community's elder population for visits to local shops, recreational facilities and medical appointments. Usage statistics for FY 2011 showed an average of two hundred and fifty rides per month with eighty three percent of the available ride times used by seniors.

"To provide a safe, quality environment for all islanders through responsible government."
