2016 Key Biscayne Municipal Election Information


The Village Clerk organizes and oversees all elections within the Village of Key Biscayne.  The next Village of Key Biscayne regular municipal election for Mayor and three Councilmembers will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.

Qualifying packages for residents interested in running for Mayor or Council are available in the Office of the Village Clerk, located in Suite 220 of Village Hall at 88 West McIntyre Street. The material can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Any citizen who is a qualified elector and a resident of the Village of Key Biscayne, Florida, for at least one (1) year preceding the date of filing may be a candidate for the office of Village Council.

If more than two candidates file for the office of Mayor, a primary election for that office will be held, if necessary, on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.

 

The Mayor shall be elected at-large for a two-year term by the electors of the Village in the manner provided in Article V of the Charter of the Village of Key Biscayne. Councilmembers shall be elected at-large for a four (4) year term by the electors of the Village in the manner provided in Article V of the Charter of the Village of Key Biscayne.

 

No person shall serve as Mayor for more than two (2) consecutive elected terms, and no person my serve on the Council, or as any combination of Mayor and Councilmember, for more that eight (8) consecutive years.

 

The duly elected Mayor and Councilmembers will be installed to their respective offices nine (9) days following the day of regular election at which s/he is elected.

 

Qualifying Requirements for 2016 municipal candidates in the Village of Key Biscayne are part of the information and required forms given here in the first part of the 2016 Candidate Handbook (PDF).

  • Filing for the office of Mayor will commence at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 and end at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 24, 2016. All candidates must file their qualifying papers with the Village Clerk during this time period.

  • Filing for the office of Councilmember will commence at 12:00 noon on Monday, August 15, 2016 and end at 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 25, 2016. All candidates must file their qualifying papers with the Village Clerk during this time period.

 

Please keep in mind that the Miami-Dade County Elections Department is in charge of registering voters, printing ballots, providing voting equipment and monitors, and tallying voting results, as outlined here.
