2019 Boat Show Traffic and Village Communications: Lessons Learned

The 2019 Miami International Boat Show has come and gone. With it came traffic, but also a steady stream of visitors to our wonderful shops and restaurants.

Despite the inevitable traffic delays, great strides were made to limit your inconvenience and improve your safety. A significant effort went into improving communication and collaboration with Boat Show organizers and paving the way for an improved plan that helped move thousands of cars per hour on and off the Rickenbacker Causeway. Your Village leaders worked diligently to create a partnership with the Boat Show and the Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne to offer a residents-only shuttle to and back from the event. The luxury bus helped close to 600 residents avoid parking and traffic delays. Freebee service around the Key was also expanded to minimize traffic on the island throughout the busy weekend.

These efforts did not wane once the event began. Key Biscayne Police Chief Charles Press spent the weekend coordinating with his counterparts with both Miami-Dade Police and City of Miami Police to ensure increased traffic flow and mitigate issues in real-time. He deployed a motorcycle unit to time traffic every hour in both directions. That information was shared in 49 posts on social media channels to provide accurate and timely traffic updates. The Village’s emergency communication system was used twice throughout the weekend to warn residents of extreme delays. It is hoped these improvements in communication and services truly helped minimize any disruption to you and your family. Village leaders are now in the process of taking a hard look at what was done and what was learned as they plan ahead for the Ultra Music Festival. Village staff is working diligently to help mitigate inconveniences to all Key Biscayne residents.

To further improve communication, we invite you to join our mailing lists and follow us on both Facebook and Twitter. Your feedback, thoughts and ideas are invaluable to this community. You are the reason Key Biscayne is paradise.
