Village Lights Video Installation
Village Lights took place in December 2003 during the second annual Art Basel Miami Beach contemporary art exhibition. Village Historian Joan Gill Blank and artist César Trasobares produced a multi-media display of historical and contemporary images of Village history and characters. The images were projected on large screens draped over the Civic Center Fire Station Building.
The video presentation also featured images specially taken for the project, including some of prominent families and groups of officers from the Police and Fire Departments posed in front of a historic Banyan Tree in Crandon Park. Former Art in Public Places Board Chair Marilyn Borroto was instrumental in recruiting participants for photos that, in some cases, recreated the poses seen in the historical photographs.
