KBPD Urges Residents to Support Passage of a Statewide Hands-Free Law to Fight Distracted Driving

Chief Press and KBPD officers encourage residents to support an effort to change State of Florida law regarding handheld devices to address the risks of distracted driving. The Village already supports such action through a resolution passed by Council.

Please read the statement below from the Florida Police Chiefs Association regarding proposed legislation in Tallahassee.

Florida is one of the worst states in the country for highway safety laws, and each day lives are forever affected by the consequences of distracted driving.  Too many families have been torn apart as the news is delivered that a loved one has been killed as a result of something so needless-the use of a cell phone.  Florida law enforcement is taking a stand to say ENOUGH is ENOUGH!  It's time for our legislators to listen to the voices of Floridians as we ask for enhanced penalties for distracted driving in the form of hands-free legislation.

Senate Bill 76 and House Bill 107 have been filed for the 2019 Legislative Session to address distracted driving and will undoubtedly save countless lives if passed.  Florida law enforcement knows all too well that the epidemic of distracted driving threatens to harm our state and the people who love to live, work and visit-we don't need to wait another year and suffer the loss of more citizens before fixing this problem!

It's time for Floridians to join together and tell our legislators to represent the interests of their constituents in supporting a hands-free law.  Use the link below to find your legislators and give them a call to express your support for SB 76 and HB 107!
