The Village of Key Biscayne Police Department is seeking Police Officers. The police officer works under the direct supervision of a platoon sergeant, performing a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties, including the protection of property, crime detection, and public safety. 

The officer is responsible for the use of independent judgment in the application of police principles, and knowledge of laws in responding to emergency or difficult situations, and other work as required. 


Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Patrolling the streets of the village on a routine basis in a marked vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, and bicycle or on foot, as assignment dictates.
  • Responding to priority calls regarding public disturbances, criminal, civil, or emergency situations. 
  • Direction of activities on site until relieved by competent authority.  Providing emergency medical assistance within training, controlling traffic, and otherwise ensuring attention is given to general public safety.
  • Assists in controlling crowds.
  • Provides police presence during special events.
  • Detection and prevention of criminal activities by surveillance of assigned business, residential, and beach areas. 
  • Notes possible criminal occurrences and take steps to prevent criminal action. 
  • Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating a good rapport with Village residents.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents and assists other officers.  Protects evidence, takes testimony from witnesses, and assists detectives in specialized investigations.
  • Enforces traffic laws and vehicle codes and promotes traffic safety.
  • Notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and makes arrests as appropriate.
  • Receives and transports property, evidence, and prisoners.
  • Directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, assist motorists and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents; preserves crime scene; protects evidence, and takes testimony from witnesses; assists detectives in specialized investigations.
  • Completely and accurately prepares a variety of daily and other reports related to crimes, accidents, and other duties.  Maintains logs, completes forms, and prepares dispositions and reports as required and in a timely manner.
  • Testifies in criminal courts, depositions, pre-file and pre-trial conferences.
  • Providing Fingerprints services to community members.  Provides a variety of related services. 
  • Provides a variety of related police services.
  • Respond to the public’s general requests for assistance.


  • High school diploma. Preference will be given to applicants with 60 college credits.
  • Possession of basic police training as required by the State of Florida
  • Preference will be given to certified candidates.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • For special assignments additional training and experience is needed:
  • The Chief of Police has full discretion over requirements and may alter them as needed.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English; other languages helpful.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively with individuals or groups or employees of the Village.
  • United States Citizenship prior to appointment. (FL Statute 943.13(2).
  • Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to interpret and appropriately apply laws, ordinances, procedures, and knowledge of various police related fields.
  • Ability to interact and relate with people and help in resolution of problems and apply human relations skills as situations require.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of Village geography.
  • Ability and willingness to work shifts including nights, weekends and holidays and be on 24-hour call.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficiency in the use and care of service weapons.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency or stressful situations alertly, with tact and empathy.
  • Ability to work in potentially hazardous environments.
  • Ability to maintain proficiency in the use and care of service weapons.


SALARY RANGE:   $60,128.60 – 102,840.31

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time /Non-Exempt
