Jose Bedia's floor designs for a series of pocket plazas along Crandon Boulevard enhance the walking experience for residents and visitors alike. His images commemorate the sea and the island's fauna - manatee, manta ray, anhinga the bird, butterflies and barracuda - in colorful, dynamic designs. These images are site-specific "murals" to be walked upon and enjoyed as pedestrians move around them. They are made of brightly colored terrazzo, contrasting with the boulevard's pink concrete sidewalks.
The plazas are located at the intersections of Crandon Boulevard and West Mashta, Seaview and East Wood (North Club) Drives. The terrazzo work for the first set of five plazas was completed in 2008 by Artistic Surfaces, Inc., based in Pompano Beach, Florida.
